AutoNumber is a type of data used in Microsoft Access tables to generate an automatically incremented numeric counter. It may be used to create an identity column which uniquely identifies each record of a table. Only one AutoNumber is allowed in each table. The data type was called Counter in Access 2.0.
How Do I Use Salesforce Auto Number Fields? Go to setup (the gear icon in the upper right). Click Object Manager and select Opportunity. Once in the Opportunity, go to Fields and Relationships. Click the NEW button on the upper right side of the screen and choose Auto Number for the field type.
You can modify the format and numbering for these auto-number fields in Salesforce Classic. From Setup, enter the name of the object whose field you want to modify in the Quick Find box, then select Fields. Click Edit next to the name of the auto-number field.
It must start numbering with: 1690. The desired behavior is when an Opportunity of that type is entered into Salesforce, it gets autonumbered beginning at #001690 and so on.

Custom Auto-Number Fields Click the Gear Icon, then select Setup. Go to Object Manager and select the Object Name where the auto number field exists. Click Fields Relationships, select the name of the Auto-Number field, then click Edit. Click Change Field Type.
If you convert an auto-number field into a text field, the data in that field remains unchanged. Also, you can safely convert a text custom field into an auto-number field without losing your data. Converting an auto-number field into any other data type results in data loss.
The first step is to research how autonumber works. This type of field, as described by Salesforce, is a system-generated sequence number that uses a display format you define. The number is automatically incremented for each new record. The options offered to configure it mostly cover formatting and start number.
