The PAGE field code is as uncomplicated as it looks. It has no effect on Words page numbering scheme. It simply tells Word to display the number of the current page at the field location. As noted above, the pages number is dependent on: The start at value assigned to the document section.
To choose a format or to control the starting number, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. To change the numbering style, select a different style in Number format.
On the toolbar ribbon, select References. Near the left end, select Insert Table of Contents. (Or select Table of Contents Insert Table of Contents. The table of contents is inserted, showing the headings and page numbering in your document.
From the Header Footer Tools menu, unclick Link to Previous. With the number still highlighted, choose Page Number from the top menu, then select Format Page Numbers. Under Page Numbering, choose Start At and then select a starting number.
Press Alt + F9, which acts as a toggle, to see the page number. You can enter fields via the interface, but I think the easiest way is to type the fields text and any switches, and then convert that text into a field by selecting the text and pressing Ctrl + F9.
Use the Page field code to insert page numbers Double-click the header or the footer area (near the top or bottom of the page). Go to Header Footer Field. In the Field names list, Select Page, and then select OK. To change the numbering format, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers.
As an example of how you can do this, follow these steps: Position the insertion point where you want the sequential number to appear. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field braces. Type seq NumList (without the quote marks). Press F9 to update the field information.
