Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose higher risks than others. Label the glass slide with the patients last name, first name and medical record number (or date of birth) using a graphite pencil (do not use ink, wax or crayon). Gently remove excessive secretion or blood at the cervical os with cotton swab and discard.
Pap smear results are reported as normal, abnormal, or unsatisfactory for evaluation. A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample.
