The four phases of a polygraph exam are the initial interrogation and pre-test interview, the exam phase, and the post-test phase.
As we note at the beginning of this chapter, polygraph testing and interviewing are used for three main purposes: event-specific investigation, employee screening, and preemployment (or preclearance) screening. These different purposes are reflected in different kinds of questions that are asked in polygraph tests.
Typical requirements include a high school diploma or the equivalent, either a bachelors degree or five years of experience as a detective, completion of polygraph training at a state-approved school, a six-month internship, and successful completion of a state-administered test.
One aspect of the pretest interview involves obtaining the subjects consent to be examined. Consent procedures vary depending on the nature of the interview, most importantly between criminal or preemployment polygraph tests.
Clear, concise yes and no answers are appropriate for most questions. If you are asked to speculate, politely decline and tell the examiner that you dont know the answer to his or her question.
If the defendant refuses to answer a specific question during the polygraph examination or in any other interview on the grounds that it is incriminating, the probation officer may not compel (e.g., through threat of revocation) the defendant to answer the question.
Polygraph tests have several useful practical applications. Application of polygraph test is extremely docHub in such fields as criminal investigation, national security, and employee recruitment and employee theft. There are different forms of polygraph tests available today.
The polygraph examiner must be independent, impartial and objective. The polygraph technique and test procedure must be explained to the examinee. Polygrams or chart tracings must be assessed manually and computerised evaluation may be used only for the purpose of quality control or to obtain other opinions.
