What kind of anesthesia is used for ACL surgery? At HSS, most patients who undergo ACL reconstruction are given an epidural nerve block during their surgery, rather than being placed fully unconscious under general anesthesia. This epidural is the same type of regional anesthesia many women receive during childbirth.
General anesthesia is given through an IV. You will be asleep during the procedure. Spinal anesthesia is given through the spine and keeps your legs numb.
General or regional anesthesia typically is used for surgery. The anesthesiologist will administer the anesthesia to put you to sleep in the operating room. The procedure usually takes less than two hours.
Most ACL reconstructions are done under general anesthesia. So youll be asleep during the surgery and not feel anything. The surgery usually takes 2 to 2 hours, and you wont need to stay in the hospital overnight.
For an open technique, the scar will run down the front of the knee and tibia, for an arthroscopic procedure, there will be multiple small incisions (about 1 cm) around the knee. There will be an additional scar if the graft was removed from somewhere on the leg other than the knee.
The two types of anesthesia used in ACL surgery are general and regional. Your anesthesiologist, after talking to you and your surgeon, will decide the best type of anesthesia for you. All your options will be discussed on the day of surgery.
Patellar tendon autograft After removing the torn ACL, the surgeon drills two holes above and below your knee creating a tunnel to insert the graft. Then, they seal the tunnel up with the bone plugs, securing them with screws. Over time, the plugs will fuse with the surrounding bone.
What Is ACL Reconstruction? A torn ACL usually is treated with a procedure called an ACL reconstruction. Surgeons replace the damaged ligament with new ACL graft tissue either taken from the patients own body (tissue from the main patellar tendon or the hamstring) or donated from someone else (called an allograft).
