This video is the second part of a series on photoemission spectroscopy. The previous video covered basic principles and instrumentation of XPS. Spectra obtained from the XPS instrument show plots of kinetic energy versus number of electrons counted, with electrons on the y-axis and kinetic energy on the x-axis. Modern instruments convert kinetic energy to binding energy using the formula h nu = binding energy + kinetic energy + phi, resulting in a plot where lower kinetic energy corresponds to higher binding energy and vice versa.
