Feature flags (also known as feature toggles or feature switches) are a software development technique that turns certain functionality on and off during runtime, without deploying new code. This allows for better control and more experimentation over the full lifecycle of features.
Feature flags allow you to manage access to data or functionality on a granular level. A common use case for feature flags is to enable certain features on a per-user basis. This guide explains how to build a feature flagging tool using the Table and Feature Flags components.
There are four types of feature flags: release flags, operational flags, experimental flags, and customer/permission flags. You can use them to enable and manage special features in your cloud application. They can also help in the release process, trunk-based development, A/B, and beta testing.
How Are Feature Flags Implemented? 1️⃣ Step 1 - Add a feature flag to your main branch. 2️⃣ Step 2 - Deploy to production. 3️⃣ Step 3 - Determine your target audience. 4️⃣ Step 4 - Plan the rollout schedule. 5️⃣ Step 5 - Launch your feature to your entire audience. 6️⃣ Step 6 - Feature flag management.
Feature Flags are a powerful tool that allows us to change the behavior of our application at runtime without the need to redeploy. This provides many benefits. Firstly, we can deploy new features into production environments in a disabled state, sometimes known as dark deployments.
The |= operator actually adds a flag to the enum, so the enum now contains two flag bits. You can use |= to add bits, while will test bits without setting them. And Bitwise AND returns a value with 1 in the targeted bit if both values contain the bit.
Feature branching provides the flexibility to decide when and what to release, while feature flagging lets you take full control of the release itself. Together, branching and flagging help you maintain and integrate short-lived branches faster and with less risk.
To enable the feature flags at controller or action level, we can use the FeatureGate attribute as shown below. [HttpGet] [FeatureGate(Edit)] public ActionResult Edit(int id) { } [HttpPost] [FeatureGate(Edit)] [ValidateAntiForgery] public ActionResult Edit(int id, TodoItem todoItem) { }
