10 Most Common Grant Writing Mistakes Not following instructions. Failing to thoroughly research the funders interests. Focusing the proposal on the needs of your organization. Careless editing. PdocHubing to the choir. Not asking for the money. Asking for the wrong amount. Submitting sloppy budgets.
Tip #6: Use Bulleted Lists In proposals, magazine articles, and blog posts, bulleted lists are a mainstay. Bulleted lists are a popular way to communicate information because they are faster to scan than densely written paragraphs. Bulleted lists also introduce more white space into a document, which helps readability.
How to write a grant proposal Write a strong cover letter. Start with a short executive summary. Introduce your organization. Write a direct problem statement. State your goals and objectives. Project design: methods and strategies. The evaluation section: tracking success. Other funding sources and sustainability.
Here are the six questions (in order) that I find to be the most helpful when editing a grant proposal: WERE THE QUESTIONS ANSWERED? WAS THE EVALUATION CRITERIA MET? HOWS THE GRAMMAR, SPELLING, WRITING STYLE? IS THE PROPOSAL ALIGNED WITH THE APPLICATION? WERE ALL FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS MET?
If you applied for a grant and were unsuccessful, reusing the same information for the same grant will definitely not get you a different outcome. The funder will need to see that you have either taken on their feedback or progressed in your writing to be successful in a future round.
The most common reasons for proposal rejection boil down to a surprisingly small set of simple and familiar failures: Deadline for submission was not met. Proposal topic was not appropriate to the funding agency to which it was submitted. Guidelines for proposal content, format, and/or length were not followed exactly.
Substantive editors (also called content or line editors) go a step further than copy editors to address clarity and style. Substantive editors perform moderate rephrasing at the sentence level all the way up to major rewrites of entire paragraphs, sections, or chapters.
The best way to write an effective grant evaluation plan is to lay out each goal and objective and align these with intended outputs and outcomes. Making sure to create Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based (SMART) goals and/or objectives will make evaluation easier.
