Zipping is one of the oldest and most commonly used methods for compressing files. Its used to save space and share big files quickly. In the past, you needed third-party programs like WinZip to unzip files in Windows. But Windows 10 lets you zip and unzip any file you want just by right-clicking.
To add files or folders to a zipped folder you created earlier, drag them to the zipped folder. If you add encrypted files to a zipped folder, theyll be unencrypted when theyre unzipped, which might result in unintentional disclosure of personal or sensitive information.
First, zipped files save storage space and increase the efficiency of your computer. Its also an effective way to improve file transfers with email. Youre able to send emails faster with smaller files. Furthermore, the ZIP file format will encrypt your data.
Locate the file or folder that you want to zip. Press and hold (or right-click) the file or folder, select (or point to) Send to, and then select Compressed (zipped) folder. A new zipped folder with the same name is created in the same location.
ZIP is a compressed file format that you can archive files with, in Windows 10. File Explorer is the default file manager utility for extracting and opening ZIPs in Windows. However, third-party file archive software can automatically replace Explorer as the default program for opening ZIPs.
Alternatively, you can unzip files on Windows 10 by: Open the zipped folder. Select the files that you want to unzip. Move the files you have chosen to a new folder to complete unzipping.
Windows 10 has built-in zip support (in Windows Explorer), but it doesnt use any external app (like WinZip). And if you need to work with other compression formats, there is always 7-Zip.
