Laser engraving relies on vector files, a special type of image file that tells the laser engraving machine how to engrave your design. Vector files contain shapes and lines that are drawn mathematically by special software.
Each file has a specific purpose. For example, vector files are best for laser engraving. While raster files and vector files share many similarities, a key difference is that raster files are made up of pixels.
Preferred Image Formats for Laser Engraving: . SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics): Ideal for logos and designs that need to be scaled without losing quality. . AI (docHub Illustrator): A popular vector graphics format. . EPS: Widely used for high-resolution graphics. Bitmap/Raster Formats: . . .
For laser engraving acceptable file formats include the following: TIFF, BMP, JPG or other Raster images that are 1-Bit black and white camera ready artwork. No Gray scale. Should be in a minimum of 300 DPI resolution.
Plastics such as PE, PC, PET, PI or PA can be laser engraved. Many types of plastics can be marked permanently, whereby the various basic materials as well as the color pigments and other admixtures (e.g. fillers, additives, flame retardants) react very differently.
I recommend using the dremel at a speed of 25,000rpm to engrave the text, when you have finished engraving you will notice that there will be a lot of burrs on the lettering, to remove this you will need to put the Dremel on 5,000rpm and run through the letters again focusing on the burred parts.
Thats why SVG files are popular for creating laser engraving files. SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics. This is a vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. In an SVG format, the file describes lines through a text format.
JPEG PNG files arent quite ready for laser cutting. Lasers need artwork made up of vector paths rather than pixel based images. If you can source or export vector design files from your software then that will work out best. We currently use DXF, AI, SVG or EPS files.
