Applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a free service offered by the Internal Revenue Service. Beware of websites on the Internet that charge for this free service.
To apply for an employer identification number, you should obtain Form SS-4 PDF and its instructions PDF. You can apply for an EIN online, by mail, or by fax. You may also apply by telephone if your organization was formed outside the U.S. or U.S. territories.
Technically it is advised to wait until your LLC is formed before the EIN is obtained, for two reasons: you want to make sure that the name you chose is in fact registered and was not rejected (for whatever reason), and secondly, you do want to provide the IRS with the exact date of formation.
Therefore, you can use a TIN in place of an EIN. However, you cannot use an EIN in place of a TIN. Another difference between these two numbers is that the TIN can be received immediately after verification is complete at no cost, while an EIN needs time as state guidelines have to be checked before it is issued.
You may apply for an EIN online if your principal business is located in the United States or U.S. Territories. The person applying online must have a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN, ITIN, EIN). You are limited to one EIN per responsible party per day.
Update Taxpayer Identification Number Select the location you want to update. Enter your updated taxpayer information so your Square business name matches what the IRS has on file. If applicable, you can replace your legal name with your business name and enter your EIN in the SSN ON FILE field.
