To transfer patent ownership to a company or another entity, each inventor must sign a document called a patent assignment which should then be recorded with the USPTO. First-time patent clients sometimes hesitate to identify inventors, especially when the principals of the company are not the inventors.
A Patent Number is assigned by the USPTO. A patent number may include up to eight characters and is formatted as follows: Utility : Patent numbers consist of six, seven or eight digits. Enter the Patent number excluding commas and spaces and omit leading zeroes.
What is a patent assignment? A patent is an ownership right granted for an invention. A patent assignment is an agreement where an inventor transfers all the rights or interests in the patent to another party or business. It is a legal process to transfer ownership from the inventor to a particular business or entity.
File to Acceptance: 12 to 32 months After filing, your application will be assigned to a patent examiner within the USPTO.
