A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix.
Type of test is noted. Any quality indicators (eg, presence or absence of endocervical/transformation zone component, partially obscuring blood, inflammation) are described. Reason is specified.
The Bethesda System is a Risk of Malignancy scale (probability of cancer) based on the analysis of cells collected during the FNA procedure (referred to as cytological analysis). This system establishes a set of categories ranging from I to VI, with each category representing a percentage of cancer risk.
The Bethesda system (TBS), officially called The Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, is a system for reporting cervical or vaginal cytologic diagnoses, used for reporting Pap smear results. It was introduced in 1988 and revised in 1991, 2001, and 2014.
The Bethesda System (TBS) The division by the Bethesda Workshop of cells from pre-cancerous lesions of the squamous epithelium into two grades instead of three was intended to improve reproducibility of reports of abnormal cervical cytology and to relate classification to the management of the patient.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) is a term used to report a category of cervical epithelial cell abnormalities described by the Bethesda system for reporting cervical cytology.
You will be asked to undress from the waist down and put on or cover up with a hospital gown. You will lie on an exam table, with your feet in stirrups. Your healthcare provider will insert an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This will spread the walls of the vagina apart to show the cervix.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
