Welcome back to module 4 where were going through and talking about all the different options as far as formatting your paragraphs. This is section 3 where I want to talk to you a little bit about working with indents. There are going to be times when you want to indent the left side of a paragraph. Normally youd hit the Tab key to do that but notice that that will actually only indent the first line and only indents it at the half inch mark. Youre going to want to indent the whole thing or maybe you want to indent both sides. So let me show you how the indents work. Normally if you were in a paragraph and you wanted to indent the first line you would just hit the Tab key on your keyboard. Thats certainly okay to do. Tab stops at every half inch on the ruler. So if you look at your ruler youve got this top indent here called a First line indent and youve indented the first line at the half inch mark. Thats not going to help very much if you wanted to indent this line at of an

\indent : the effect of this command depends where it is used: in a horizontal mode (inside a paragraph or an \hbox ) or math mode it inserts a space (an empty box) of width \parindent. in a vertical mode (between paragraphs or in a \vbox ) it triggers the start a new indented paragraph.
To indent using the Tab key: Place the insertion point at the very beginning of the paragraph you want to indent. Press the Tab key. On the Ruler, you should see the first-line indent marker move to the right by 1/2 inch. The first line of the paragraph will be indented.
The Plain TeX (and LaTeX) commands \indent and \noindent are defined in ConTeXt, but are not hooked into the indentation mechanism. Now, if we want to indent after an itemize, starting the next paragraph with \indent does not work; to get indentation we have to say \indentation.
To indent the first line of a paragraph, put your cursor at the beginning of the paragraph and press the tab key. When you press Enter to start the next paragraph, its first line will be indented.
Select the text where you want to add a hanging indent. Go to Home Paragraph dialog launcher Indents and Spacing. Under Special, select one of the following indent styles: Hanging.
To indent the current line, or a visual block: ctrl-t, ctrl-d - indent current line forward, backwards (insert mode) visual or - indent block by sw (repeat with . ) then try hitting the F5 key while in insert mode (or just :set paste ).
How Do You Indent All Lines of Code? Open your file in Vim by typing vim filename. Press Esc to enter command mode. Type gg=G and press Enter. gg moves the cursor to the beginning of the file. =G re-indents all lines from the top to the bottom of the file.
