Consider giving a salary range, not a number If a job post asks applicants to state their expected salary when applying for the position, then give a range not a specific figure youre comfortable with. Answers like Negotiable might work, but they can also make you look evasive.
When you include your salary requirements in a cover letter, consider phrasing it as a salary range instead of an absolute number. You can say something like, My salary requirement is in the $50,000-60,000 range. While this doesnt give the employer an exact figure, it gives them an idea of what you hope to earn.
Employers cannot ask for pay history or refuse to hire, interview, promote or employ applicants who do not provide it. Employers may not screen applicants based on pay history nor require specific pay history to satisfy a minimum or maximum criteria. Employers may confirm pay history after an offer of employment.
List your job title, company, and salary for each job in reverse chronological order with your current or most recent job at the top of the list. List your gross annual salary (the amount prior to taxes being withheld) including any bonuses or other additional compensation over the base pay that you have received.
When answering desired salary or expected salary questions on an application, the best approach is to write in negotiable or keep the field blank. If a numerical response is required, enter 000 and in a notes section, mention that salary is negotiable based on further understanding of the position.
At the end of the day, you are not obligated to disclose your current salary to hiring managers or potential employers. Remind your prospective employer that you will consider all reasonable offers, and demonstrate the value that you will bring to their company.
Provide the salary history in your cover letter. For example, include a brief sentence that says My salary history ranges from $10 an hour to $25 hour. You dont have to go into detail about which job paid how much. This salary history sentence lets the employer now how expensive it may be to hire you.
You can try to skirt the question with a broad answer, such as, My salary expectations are in line with my experience and qualifications. Or, If this is the right job for me, Im sure we can come to an agreement on salary. This will show that youre willing to negotiate. Offer a range.
