Data contracts are internal agreements between data producers and consumers, defining schema, data semantics, SLAs, and terms of use in a structured format. It often involves a cultural change in the organization and may pair the CDO and CTO for accountability. Lack of visibility and understanding downstream use cases of data led to the need for data contracts. Data teams strive for higher data standards for machine learning and consumer-facing apps.

A data contract is a formal agreement between a service and a client that abstractly describes the data to be exchanged. That is, to communicate, the client and the service do not have to share the same types, only the same data contracts.
Here are the complete URL set for your reference: In this chapter, we will see how to add attributes to a Data Contract and Data Member. In our previous chapter, we saw that a Data Contract is nothing but a simple C# class and the Data Member is the member of the class, it might be any data type.
With data contracts in the warehouse, we can implement enforcement mechanisms to try to proactively catch and address issues. Specifically, we enforce contracts in two ways: making sure the table/columns can meet the contract in the warehouse and ensuring any changes made to a contract wont break existing consumers.
WCF uses a serialization engine called the Data Contract Serializer by default to serialize and deserialize data. We can also explicitly create a data contract by using DataContractAttribute and DataMemberAttribute attributes. This attribute can be applied to classes, structures, and enumerations.
How to implement data contracts Enforce data contracts at the data producer level. You need someone on the data producer side to manage data contracts. Cover schemas in data contracts. Cover semantics in data contracts. Ensure data contracts dont affect iteration speed for software developers.
Data Member are the fields or properties of your Data Contract class. You must specify [DataMember] attribute on the property or the field of your Data Contract class to identify it as a Data Member. DataContractSerializer will serialize only those members, which are annotated by [DataMemeber] attribute.
The main purpose of an SLA is to ensure that both parties have clear expectations for their responsibilities. In contrast, a data contract is a set of conditions you set up to prevent downstream consumers from having data quality issues, often within one company or service.
