This time off might be called compassionate leave or special leave. In all circumstances theres no legal right for this time off to be paid, but some employers might offer pay. Employers and employees should check the employees contract or organisations policy.
You do not have a statutory right to be paid for any time you take off around the time or after your friend or relative dies. But many companies do offer some paid bereavement leave so its worth checking your contract of employment your companys policy on compassionate leave if they have one.
We offer a minimum of five paid days of time off for the death of a loved one to attend funeral or memorial arrangements, resolve financial matters such as inheritance or estate affairs, or personal mourning. If travel is required, two extra days of unpaid leave can be taken, provided proof of travel arrangements.
An employee may utilize such leave to make funeral arrangements, settle family affairs, attend the funeral or memorial services, and for bereavement. Full-time employees shall receive up to three (3) days of bereavement leave with pay (up to a maximum of 24 work hours or 36 hours for 56 hour employees).
Walmart allows employees to take 3 days of paid bereavement leave in the event of the death of an immediate family member.
From our research with employers, a typical amount is five days paid leave, but its often more than that two weeks is quite common. If there is no bereavement policy, you might be able to take time off as sick leave or holiday leave.
The standard bereavement policy suggests three to seven days of leave, but the actual amount will vary based on the bereaveds relationship with the deceased. Most bereavement policies differentiate between the loss of a core family member versus peripheral family and friends.
