One aspect of the pretest interview involves obtaining the subjects consent to be examined. Consent procedures vary depending on the nature of the interview, most importantly between criminal or preemployment polygraph tests.
A relevant question is one that deals with the real issue of concern to the investigation. These questions include asking whether the examinee perpetrated the target act or knows who did it and perhaps questions about particular pieces of evidence that would incriminate the guilty person.
The kinds of questions that are used for polygraph testing have been labeled relevant questions, control questions, irrelevant questions, and concealed information or guilty knowledge questions.
There should be enough facts in the question to avoid outside issues. There should be no more facts in the question than necessary. The facts in the question should not only be correct, but would be recognized as correct by the perpetrator. The question must not imply or assume guilt.
The polygraph examiner receives and reviews the facts of the case. The examiner formulates the specific test questions based upon the facts of the case and the examinees version of the events. The examiner explains the test process to the examinee and reviews the facts of the case during the pretest interview.
The examiner must ensure that the subject is in the proper frame of mind, is physically and emotionally suitable for examination, and is familiar with polygraph questioning techniques. Control questions are determined during the pretest interview, and these questions must evoke the subjects genuine concern.
