Insureds dont have the authority to issue their own certificates. The agent, under contract with the carrier, issues a COI on behalf of the insurer.
Many times the specimen certificate of insurance will be used for providing information on request for proposals. This is provided to your firms prospective client to show the policies in place and the limits on those specific policies meet the contract requirements.
A certificate of insurance (COI) is a document from an insurer to show you have business insurance. Theyre also known as certificates of liability insurance or proof of insurance.
The certificate holder receives a copy of your COI and also receives notifications in the event that your coverage expires, renews, changes, or is canceled. A certificate holder can be an individual or a company that has a vested interest in your business.
Call your broker, explain to them what the minimum coverage amount is and that you need proof of insurance. If your policy already meets the requirements, then the broker will contact your carrier to secure the COI.
The COI verifies the existence of an insurance policy and summarizes the key aspects and conditions of the policy. For example, a standard COI lists the policyholders name, the policys effective date, the type of coverage, policy limits, and other important details of the policy.
You can also identify the additional insured on your policy from the Description of Operations section. Look for the additional insured entity name (or the attached endorsement) in its description. Point your Certificate Holders to these locations in your certificate of insurance.
A certificate of insurance sample should include the name of the company providing evidence of the insurance policy, the identification number of the insurance policy, the type of insurance policy that is included, and the limits of the liability of the insurance policy.
