Both the online estimator method and worksheet method work well if youd prefer not to give your employer information about other income you might have. Or, Check a box and have your employer withhold at a default rate. Checking the box works best if all the jobs have a similar amount of pay.
If there are only two jobs held at the same time in your household, you may check the box in Step 2 on the forms for both jobs. The standard deduction and tax brackets will be divided equally between the two jobs. You will not need to furnish a new Form W-4 to account for pay changes at either job.
If the box is checked, the standard deduction and tax brackets will be cut in half for each job to calculate withholding. This option is accurate for jobs with similar pay; otherwise, more tax than necessary may be withheld, and this extra amount will be larger the greater the difference in pay is between the two jobs.
To claim exempt, write EXEMPT under line 4c. You may claim EXEMPT from withholding if: o Last year you had a right to a full refund of All federal tax income and o This year you expect a full refund of ALL federal income tax.
