To insert page numbers in InDesign, you have to use a placeholder called Current Page Number. You can place it on any page or on the master page of your document. The placeholder will display the number of the page where it sits or the master page prefix.
From the Type menu, select Insert Special CharacterMarkersCurrent Page Number. On your Master Page, the numbering character will be the page prefix; A, B, C, etc. Style the character any way you like, including adding color or knocking it out of a shape.
Go to Header Footer Page Number, and then click Page Number. Choose the position and alignment of page numbers. If you dont want a page number to appear on the first page, clear Show number on first page.
Open your InDesign document. Click the Type tool in the toolbar. Click and drag your cursor to create a text frame at the bottom of the page. Type your footer text into the text frame.
In the Caption dialog box click Numbering. Select the Include chapter number check box. In the Chapter starts with style list, select the heading style that was applied to the chapter heading. In the Use separator list, select a punctuation mark to separate the chapter number from the caption number.
Create a text box on the Parent page in the desired location. Go to Type Insert Special Character Markers Current Page Number. Apply the parent page to the rest of the document to insert page numbers.
Creating chapters in InDesign Put the cursor on the front matter document to highlight. Go to File Save as . . . Now rename the new document. In the book window, click the + to add that new chapter. All chapters and back matter use Arabic numerals.
