Rotate a spatula 360° once to obtain a single sample. Smear the sample onto the labeled slide. Fix the sample immediately (before it is air-dried) using a cytology spray fixative. Hold the fixative 15-20 cm (6 to 8 inches) away from the slide and evenly spray the slide by depressing the plunger 2 or 3 times.
What about using a numbing agent? If you've had an IUD inserted, your provider probably used a numbing agent to help reduce pain in your vagina and cervix. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to do the same before a Pap smear. The presence of a numbing agent can obscure your results.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap smear, as these may wash away or obscure abnormal cells. Try not to schedule a Pap smear during your menstrual period. It's best to avoid this time of your cycle, if possible.
Do not use douche, bubble bath, or use vaginal medicine for three days before Pap test. You may shower, but do not tub bathe 24 hours before the Pap test. Inform your clinician about additional medications/conditions that may interfere with an accurate test.
The Pap smear shouldn't hurt, but it might be uncomfortable. The good news is, it's over quickly.
If you want to actually see your cervix, place a mirror on the floor underneath your pelvis. You may have to use your nondominant hand to separate your labia for easier visualization.
It doesn't take much to prepare for a pap smear. Some women may feel like they need to shave their pubic hair, but it's unnecessary for this test. You should only tackle it if you'll be more comfortable. Your doctor has seen it all, so a little bit of pubic hair won't bother him.
The combination of an extended-tip spatula with an endocervical brush (Cytobrush) is the most effective method for obtaining cervical cells. Detection of endocervical cells is a good indication of adequate smears and detection of disease.
The Cervex Brush should be rotated 5 times in a clockwise direction. The Plastic spatula should be rotated through 360 degrees and the endocervical brush rotated through one quarter to one half turn.
One of the main causes of discomfort is the speculum (the instrument used to hold the walls of the vagina open). It is now possible to do cervical screening by testing for the virus that causes cervical cancer; human papillomavirus (HPV). An advantage of HPV testing is that samples can be taken without a speculum.
