The home office deduction allows qualified taxpayers to deduct certain home expenses when they file taxes. To claim the home office deduction on their 2021 tax return, taxpayers generally must exclusively and regularly use part of their home or a separate structure on their property as their primary place of business.

There is no specified formula with HMRC to calculate home office costs. Therefore, to simplify it, you need to divide your business and private costs reasonably. The most common method used for calculating home office costs is to divide our total expenses by the number of rooms you have utilised for business use.
The easiest way to calculate your home office expenses is to use HMRCs published allowance for the additional costs of running your business from home. You dont need receipts to prove your expenses and you can claim 6 per week since the 2020/21 tax year, which is an allowance of 312 each year.
If you work from home 2 days per week, divide 100 by 7 and then multiply it by 2 to get your annual business electricity expense. Use HMRCs simplified expenses checker to compare what you can claim using simplified expenses against a claim based on your actual costs.
Area Method: Divide the area used for your business by the total area of your home. For example, if your home is 2000 square feet and your home office is 400 square feet, your office space is 20% of the total area of your home.
Total Expenses = Net Revenue - Net Income.
If you prefer to work out your actual costs, youll have to calculate the total cost of running your home (including mortgage/rent and utilities) and then deduct the business proportion of those costs. Its a lot more effort than simplified expenses, but it could mean a larger amount goes towards your claim.
