What characters can a domain name contain? A domain name can only contain the letters A-Z, the digits 0-9 and hyphen (-), in addition to one punctuation (.) used for grouping the domains in hierarchies, e.g. under . no or .com.
RFC952. 1. A name (Net, Host, Gateway, or Domain name) is a text string up to 24 characters drawn from the alphabet (A-Z), digits (0-9), minus sign (-), and period (.). Note that periods are only allowed when they serve to delimit components of domain style names.
Domain names can only use letters, numbers, the fada character (acute accent) and hyphens (-). Spaces and other symbols are not permitted for use. Names cannot begin or end with a hyphen and are not case sensitive. Domains cannot exceed 63 characters.
