If you need to sum a column or row of numbers, let Excel do the math for you. Select a cell next to the numbers you want to sum, select AutoSum on the Home tab, press Enter, and youre done. When you select AutoSum, Excel automatically enters a formula (that uses the SUM function) to sum the numbers. Heres an example.
Select the first cell in the column. To let Excel know we are entering a formula, type an = sign. Now, there are number of ways to write a formula. We could type the values in each column with a - sign between them, and get the correct result.
Use the SUBTOTAL function to count the number of values in an Excel table or range of cells. If the table or range contains hidden cells, you can use SUBTOTAL to include or exclude those hidden cells, and this is the biggest difference between SUM and SUBTOTAL functions.
If you want to count logical values, text, or error values, use the COUNTA function. If you want to count only numbers that meet certain criteria, use the COUNTIF function or the COUNTIFS function.
Select the cell in the worksheet where you want the drop-down list. Go to the Data tab on the Ribbon, then select Data Validation. On the Settings tab, in the Allow box, select List. If its OK for people to leave the cell empty, check the Ignore blank box.
One quick and easy way to add values in Excel is to use AutoSum. Just select an empty cell directly below a column of data. Then on the Formula tab, click AutoSum Sum. Excel will automatically sense the range to be summed.
On the worksheet, select the cell in which you want to enter the formula. Type the = (equal sign) followed by the constants and operators (up to 8192 characters) that you want to use in the calculation. For our example, type =1+1.
Just select an empty cell directly below a column of data. Then on the Formula tab, click AutoSum Sum. Excel will automatically sense the range to be summed. (AutoSum can also work horizontally if you select an empty cell to the right of the cells to be summed.)
