Temporary preliminary (TP) corrections In simple terms, it is an ENC layer which contains TP corrections of all the charts (ENCs). This layer is super imposed on the ENCs to display the TPs.
Guidance (1) General: (i) ECDIS shall be supplied by an emergency source of electrical power; (ii) ECDIS is required to connect to Radar (video and ARPA information) and AIS as well as gyro compass, speed log and GPS receiver. This requirement is recommended to ECDIS for existing ships as far as practicable.
An ECDIS functions as the hardware, while an ENC contains the dataset of relevant information for a voyage. Together, these two components create a powerful digital navigation solution. However, they bring much more to the table than eliminating paper waste and storage via basic digitization.
Temporary and Preliminary Notices are issued by Hydrographic Offices when the information will only be valid for a short period of time or needs to be promulgated quickly and a normal chart correction would take too long to prepare and distribute. Users may individually apply TP notices to their ECDIS.
ECDIS carriage requirements The amended SOLAS regulation V/19 requires all newly built passenger ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards, as well as newly built cargo ships of 3,000 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages to be fitted with ECDIS.
The sensors providing the data inputs to ECDIS are the following: The global positioning system (GPS and/or DGPS). The automatic identification system (AIS). The radar and automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA).
Upon purchasing these items, an identification code called User Permit for each of ECDIS and of ENC display software will be given. Without this User Permit, ENCs cannot be available. Cell Permit is a decrypting code for decoding the data of ENC.
The user must highlight the PERMIT. TXT file and then click open to the ENC Permits. After importing the cell permits successfully, the ENCs of the desired voyage will be available in the ECDIS. A backup of the permits can also be created by using the Backup button in the selected drive.
