so I get this question a lot whatamp;#39;s the difference between a crown and an online in fact a lot of patients come in to see me for second opinions and we offer no charge second opinions their dentist tells them they need the crown they come in we look at it and we can do something more conservative we can preserve more tooth structure by doing a porcelain online and all the difference is instead of Shaving the whole tooth down to a stump and then capping it which is what a crown is we actually just remove the defective part of the tooth leaving intact the remaining part of the tooth structure donamp;#39;t touch it itamp;#39;s healthy leave it alone make a little porcelain piece that actually fits down into place like a little jigsaw puzzle that porcelain gets bonded to the rest of the tooth and now all of a sudden youamp;#39;ve got a restored tooth but you did not shave it down for a crown and I think long term you know in my mouth thatamp;#39;s what I would want so we offer

Inlays are beneficial because they tend to strengthen teeth, are made of resin or porcelain to blend in with teeth, and are often more durable than traditional fillings. Gold or other metals can be used which are even stronger.
After the procedure there may be a little discomfort with the inlay or onlay, but many people adapt immediately to the new chewing surfaces. Sometimes the tissue around the work is sore or the tooth is temporarily sensitive to cold or hot foods. These minor problems should resolve themselves in one or two days.
Its important to avoid hot and cold foods for at least a few hours while your filling sets. Pain should subside within a week or so and sensitivity should stop after two to four weeks. If it continues for longer, contact your dentist.
It is normal for the tooth to be sensitive for a few days, or even a few weeks, after the inlay/onlay has been placed. In general, however, this sensitivity should be relatively mild and trending towards improvement within a couple of days.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
It is also normal to experience some temperature and pressure sensitivity after each appointment. The sensitivity should subside a few weeks after the placement of the final restoration. A mild pain medication (Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Motrin) every 4 hours) should ease any residual discomfort.
A systemic review found that the most common cause of onlay failure is ceramic fracture, followed by ceramic de-bonding from the tooth structure, and the occurrence of secondary caries which is seen as a discolouration at the margins of the restoration.
