There are technically two types of GIF file: the GIF87a and the newer, improved GIF89a. Both are fully supported on most browsers, and both use . gif as their file name suffix. GIF87a is the original format for indexed color images.
For simplicity, we classify the different types of GIFs into 3 major categories: video-based, animation-based, and stickers. Video-based GIFs are the most traditional GIF that youre probably familiar with. They feature short clips of video content.
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF is a raster file format designed for relatively basic images that appear mainly on the Internet. Each file can support up to 8 bits per pixel and can contain 256 indexed colours.
Advantages of animated WebP compared to animated GIF WebP supports 24-bit RGB color with an 8-bit alpha channel, compared to GIFs 8-bit color and 1-bit alpha. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression; in fact, a single animation can combine lossy and lossless frames. GIF only supports lossless compression.
