In general, the recovery time for ACL tears is about six to nine months without surgery. However, balancing resting the ACL with therapeutic movement can help keep you in the lower end of this range. Rest is important for ACL tears because your body does most of its healing when you arent moving.
How long does it take an ACL to heal without surgery? While each person is different, you may heal from a partial ACL tear within 3 months, especially if you undergo physical therapy to rebuild strength and function in your knee.
Possible treatment scenarios include patients undergoing an autograft or allograft revision reconstruction, either as a first stage or as a second stage surgery after bone grafting the tunnels first and/or a combined proximal tibial osteotomy.
Without surgery, your ACL will remain torn. The knee might healthe swelling and pain will stop. But a torn anterior cruciate ligament does not reattach or heal itself.
ACL injuries can either be complete or partial. While complete ACL tears almost always require surgery, partial ACL tears may be treated effectively with nonsurgical methods. ACL tears are graded by severity and are called sprains (a sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament).
If nothing is done, the ACL injury may turn into chronic ACL deficiency. Your knee may become more and more unstable and may give out more often. The abnormal sliding within the knee also can hurt cartilage. It can trap and damage the menisci in the knee and can also lead to early osteoarthritis.
Untreated ACL injuries accelerate the development of osteoarthritis. Without proper support from the ACL, the articular cartilage starts to break down at a more rapid pace than normal. Following your knee injury, bleeding can occur inside the joint. You may or may not have signs alerting you to the problem.
The normal ACL should have a taut, low to intermediate signal intensity with continuous fibres in all planes and sequences. It courses parallel or steeper than the intercondylar line. The PL bundle usually has higher signal intensity than the AM bundle.
