Inlay on guitars or similar fretted instruments are decorative materials set into the wooden surface of the instrument using standard inlay techniques.
An inlay refers to a filling that usually consists of gold, porcelain, or resin that is used to treat a cavity. An inlay is larger than a filling while being smaller than a crown. The difference between an inlay and a filling is that an inlay lies within the cusps on the chewing portion of the tooth.

Yes, slightly brighter sound since the inlay is harder than the wood, but probably such a small effect you couldnt hear it. I do not want to change the subject, but just as an example of how surprised I was at the tone difference, I bought a couple high end instrument cables.
Inlay covers a range of techniques in sculpture and the decorative arts for inserting pieces of contrasting, often colored materials into depressions in a base object to form ornament or pictures that normally are flush with the matrix.
inlay | (ˌ)in-ˈlā verb. A decorative technique, in which part of the surface of a piece of jewelry, furniture, or ceramic is cut away and a stone, mother of pearl, or some other substance is embedded into the hollowed-out area so that it is level with the surface of the piece.
Inlaid refers to a piece of jewelry that has a series of channels or voids in the metal in which gemstones or other decorations are inlaid. Inlaid jewelry or inlay jewelry is considered difficult to craft, and therefore professional jewelers work for many years to perfect the craft.
