First Tiles Date Back 2600 BC! Tiles are categorised technically by how they are made. The two main methods of making tiles are by pressing clay powder or extruding wet clay.
Since ceramic tile can absorb more water than porcelain tile, a glazed finish on a ceramic tile can be advantageous in helping it resist spills and staining.
What Is Tile Inlay? Tile inlay is a contrasting design set into a tiled surface such as a floor, patio, bathroom wall, or backsplash. It may range from a simple single-color, straight-edged border to an intricately complex piece of art.
The three groups are divided into tiles of low water absorption, designated Group I, tiles of medium water absorption, designated Group II and tiles of high water absorption, designated Group III.
Porcelain Tile Porcelain tiles have an impervious water absorption rate of 0.5% or less and tests show porcelain is harder than granite. Porcelains unique composition and manufacturing process give it incredible durability and low water absorption rates.
Porosity and Water Absorption Ceramic tiles, while durable, have a noticeably higher water absorption rate than porcelain tiles, typically ranging from 3 to 7 percent. Ceramic tiles, while still durable, have a noticeably higher water absorption rate, typically ranging from 3% to 7%.
High Density (Fully Vitreous) A water absorption rate between . 5 percent and 3 percent makes tile suitable for use in exterior applications as well as interior ones. Extremely Dense (Impervious) The most dense tiles have a water absorption rate of . 5 percent or less.
