The first inlay works are probably attributable to the first Egyptian dynasty, who lived around 3000 BC. They could create works of well-made inlay materials of various kinds and colors such as glass, ivory, obsidian, quartz, wood.
There are two main techniques to bind the metal in place: epoxy and superglue/cyanacrylate. Superglue will give the closest appearance to solid metal, if it is properly finished. However, epoxy is easier for filling larger voids and may be stronger in the long term, if warping of the wood is a potential concern.
For metal-to-wood glue-ups, your best bet will be epoxy, Stephen. Epoxy bonds wood to nearly anything. Before you apply finish, mask off an area slightly smaller than the metal plate to leave yourself an unfinished gluing surface.
History of Mysore Wood Inlay - Having its roots way back in the 18th century, this art form is believed to have originated in Persia. However, it made its way to India from a town called Srirangapatna in Mysore in present-day Karnataka. After that, there was no looking back.
Proper inlay requires materials of contrasting hardness to hold well, and contrasting color to look good. A combination that does well on both counts is the use of pure silver or gold into blackened steel. Another popular combination has fine silver pressed into copper or brass.
The process of inlaying one piece of metal into another by mechanical means (no soldering required). To learn the basic skills of metal inlay by inlaying a piece of round copper wire into a brass sheet. Anneal both the brass sheet and the copper wire. Quench and pickle.
- Make sure to angle the edges in a bit to make sure the metal doesnt pop out of the wood when movement occurs. - Keep it simple. Complex designs will be hard to complete with this type of work, the thin wood will burn or chip out when sanding.
A polyurethane-based adhesive like Gorilla Glue or Gorilla Wood Glue is ideal for gluing metal to wood. Wood can be a tricky surface to glue to metal because the two are so different in density and porosity. However, the strength and flexibility of polyurethane-based glues are more than up for the challenge.
