When to Use Inlays/Onlays. The dentist near you will recommend inlays/onlays when you have chipped or cracked teeth or are suffering from tooth decay. A crack or chip is not only a cosmetic issue but also affects the function of a tooth when it comes to chewing and biting.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
An inlay refers to a filling that usually consists of gold, porcelain, or resin that is used to treat a cavity. An inlay is larger than a filling while being smaller than a crown. The difference between an inlay and a filling is that an inlay lies within the cusps on the chewing portion of the tooth.
Inlay in wood In a wood matrix, inlays commonly use wood veneers, but other materials like shells, mother-of-pearl, horn or ivory may also be used. Pietre dure, or coloured stones inlaid in white or black marbles, and inlays of precious metals in a base metal matrix, are other forms of inlay.
An inlay is a technique of inserting pieces of contrasting material into depressions made on a base object. The production of bone inlay furniture is a three-step process and requires up to a month to create. First, the fragments of camel bones are shaped delicately.
What Types of Inlay and Onlay are there? Porcelain Inlays. There are different types of porcelain that can be used and they vary in their structure, features and benefits. Gold Inlays. Composite Inlays.
