Historically inlays and onlays will have been made from gold and this material is still commonly used today. Alternative materials such as porcelain were first described being used for inlays back in 1857. Due to its tooth like colour, porcelain provides better aesthetic value for the patient.
The process of inlaying begins with a design or pattern which is carved out from a material. In our case its either mother of pearl or cruelty-free polished bone from camels that have died of natural causes, but it can be done with wood, metal, marble and ivory.
Bone inlay is a process that involves using animal bones and other materials such as abalone shell (also known as Mother of Pearl), brass, glass or timber to create finely detailed patterns on wooden surfaces.
Each finished piece of furniture is certified by the auditing agency, WCCB (Wildlife Crime Control Bureau). (Note: No animals are slaughtered for this process. Ethical practices are followed when gathering remains of animals that have died naturally).
What is a wood inlay and what does it do? A wood inlay is the addition of an often contrasting, colored material into a shape thats cut out to accept the inlay. It is fit flush with the item its added to.
Inlay is commonly used in the production of decorative furniture, where pieces of colored wood, precious metals or even diamonds are inserted into the surface of the carcass using various matrices including clear coats and varnishes.
Traditionally, gold has been the material of choice for inlays and onlays. In recent years, however, porcelain has become increasingly popular due to its strength and color, which can potentially match the natural color of your teeth.
The Art and Craftsmanship of Bone Inlay Furniture The creation process for these exquisite pieces is a delicate dance of precision and artistry. Ethically sourced camel bones form the foundation of this craftsmanship, ensuring that every element is sustainable, responsible, and respectful towards nature.
