Character, paragraph, and linked styles appear in the Styles group on the Home tab. You can quickly apply a style from the gallery of styles. To see more information about each style, click the Styles Dialog Box Launcher. The Styles task pane opens.
Right-click the text on which you want to base a new style. In the mini toolbar that appears, click Styles, and then click Create a Style. In the Create New Style from Formatting dialog box, give your style a name and click OK. Your new style will now appear in the Styles gallery.
Hitting just enter will tell Word to create a new paragraph, not a new line. Creating a new paragraph and not a new line will leave a gap between the text, as this is how a new paragraph is formatted. Using shift-enter will create a new line, and not leave as much of a gap between the text. To create paragraph and table styles, complete the following steps: In the Word document, on the Create New Style from Formatting window, specify the name of the new style. Each theme has its own set of styles. Select the text you want to format. Tip: If you place your cursor in a paragraph, the style is applied to the whole paragraph. In the Home tab, expand the text styles list. Select a style from the scrollable style list or select See More Styles to explore more styles.
The keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S will open the Apply Styles toolbar. This small floating toolbar can be dragged anywhere on your screen. It displays the current style; applying another style requires using the dropdown.
