In a wood matrix, inlays commonly use wood veneers, but other materials like shells, mother-of-pearl, horn or ivory may also be used. Pietre dure, or coloured stones inlaid in white or black marbles, and inlays of precious metals in a base metal matrix, are other forms of inlay.
On the Guitar Fretboard The open E string gives us a low E note. The 12th fret E is the same note, but an octave higher in pitch. F note at the 1st fret. G note at the 3rd fret. A note at the 5th fret. B note at the 7th fret. C note at the 8th fret. D note at the 10th fret.
Fret markers are fretboard inlays that are functional as well as decorative; they mark off specific frets in order to visually indicate neck position to the performer. On guitars and basses, fret markers are usually found on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 15th, 17th, and 19th fret.
Some popular fretboard inlays include rhombuses, parallelograms, isosceles trapezoids, shark fins and rectangles.
The dots on guitar frets serve as visual markers to help guitarists easily locate specific notes on the fretboard . These dots are typically found on the 3rd , 5th , 7th , 9th , and 12th frets , with the 12th fret usually having a double dot .
On guitars, there are two popular fretboard inlay schemes: A common position marker inlay scheme (1) involves single inlays on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, double inlays on the 12th, single inlays on the 15th, 17th, 19th, and 21st, and if present, double inlays on the 24th.
