Use A Soft Toothbrush Use a soft toothbrush to scrub away any stains or dirt that may have accumulated on the surface of your bone inlay furniture. If there are stubborn areas, like dried-on food particles from lunchtime pizza slices last week, dont be afraid to use some dish soap and elbow grease!

Using the same basic technique that you use for the base coat. Apply the stain in small areas following the grain of the wood.
An accidental stain droplet or wiping mark on a freshly stained surface can be masked by applying enough stain to that area to penetrate the wood as deeply as the droplet or wiping mark. Then remove the surplus stain, making your final passes with the grain using a clean cloth.
Discard finishes that have become thick, rubbery, stringy or separated, as well as those with a skunky odor or obvious mold growth. Ditto for water-based paint or finish that looks like cottage cheese. If the color, viscosity and smell are right, do a drying test.
Uneven Sanding: If the wood surface is not sanded properly or if there are rough spots, the stain may be absorbed differently, resulting in blotches. Wood Condition: Moisture content and the condition of the wood can also affect how it absorbs stain. Wet or damaged wood may lead to uneven stain absorption.
Water-based stains can be applied to a previous layer of cured epoxy, or to a substrate that is intended to be clear-coated with epoxy. The stain must be completely cured before adding the next layer of epoxy.
The main culprit of stain bleed back is failure to allow the stain to fully dry. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to ascertain whether or not stain has completely dried, because while it appears dry on the surface of the wood, an abundance of stain deep in the cell cavities is often still liquid.
Always sand between coats with 320 grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish. Wipe off the dust with a tack rag before applying the second coat. If adding a third layer of finish or more, be sure to sand and clean off saw dust in between coats.
