Usually, inlays and onlays are used to restore the back teeth as these are the teeth that do the most work, are the hardest to clean and often suffer the most from decay. Sometimes, they are also used to replace older amalgam fillings.
Getting a dental inlay put onto your tooth is a relatively painless and straightforward process. Your dental professional will numb the damaged area of your mouth with a local anesthetic and then drill into the affected tooth to clean out the decay.
The procedure for inlays/onlays are the same and take 2 visits over 2 weeks. Usually this takes a total of 1 to 2 hours. After preparing a tooth, the restoration is designed by an expert technician and cemented into your tooth by the dentist.
An inlay is like a filling because it covers the decayed part of the tooth. The difference with inlays is that the inlay is formed in a dental lab as a hardened piece. Then, the dentist will place the dental inlay into the tooth and use resin or dental cement to bond it permanently to the tooth.
The actual procedure for an inlay/onlay takes two appointments unless a CEREC machine is being used to fabricate it, whilst you are in the chair. The first appointment to prepare the tooth tends to take a little longer (about an hour) than the second appointment (to cement it in).
Inlays are a type of indirect restoration (filling) that is used to restore extensively damaged or decayed teeth.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
During this process, the dentist removes the portion of the tooth that is decayed and puts resin on the tooth. The dentist will then take the inlay or onlay and cement it into the tooth, followed by a polishing of the inlay or onlay. The inlay or onlay can also be made of ceramic, and the same procedure is followed.
