What is included in an AMI?

Each AMI includes a template for the root volume required for a particular type of instance. A typical example might contain an operating system, an application server and applications.

How do I add space to an EC2 instance?

Connect to your EC2 Windows instance using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Open a command prompt, and then run the diskmgmt. msc command to launch Disk Management. From Action, choose Refresh. Open the context (right-click) menu for the Volume, and then choose Extend Volume. Choose Next, Next, Finish.

Does AMI include EBS?

The process of creating an AMI image will also create EBS snapshots. So even if you need to restore a single EBS volume, you can do so from the individual EBS snapshot. For these reasons, unless there are business factors weighing against it, we recommend creating AMI images instead of just EBS snapshots.

What is the difference between EBS backed AMI and snapshot?

AMIs hold the data that is needed in order to launch a new EC2 instance and are preferred for keeping a golden image that can support the automated provisioning of the same baseline instance. Conversely, EBS snapshots are a backup of an EBS volume, from a specific point in time, that is stored in Amazon S3.

What does an AMI include?

An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a master image for the creation of virtual servers -- known as EC2 instances -- in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. The machine images are like templates that are configured with an operating system and other software that determine the users operating environment.

What is not stored in AMI?

Specifically, an AMI does not store instance settings such as the instance type, which determines the hardware of the host computer for your instance. It also does not store network settings like VPC configurations or security group details, as these are configured when you launch an instance from the AMI.

Does AMI include EBS volumes?

The AMI includes the root volume and snapshots of the EBS volumes attached to the instance when the image was created. You cant launch new instances from EBS snapshots alone; you must launch new instances from an AMI. When you create an AMI, it is created in the account and Region that you are using.
