Checking your Social Security card is the fastest way to find your SSN. All Social Security cards have the persons name and Social Security number printed on the front, even if the person is not allowed to work in the United States.
The Social Security number is a nine-digit number in the format AAA-GG-SSSS. The number has three parts: the first three digits, called the area number because they were formerly assigned by geographical region; the middle two digits, the group number; and the last four digits, the serial number.
Structure of Social Security Numbers information contributed by Jerry Crow (crow@anasaz.com) and Barbara Bennett A Social Security Number (SSN) consists of nine digits, commonly written as three fields separated by hyphens: AAA-GG-SSSS. The first three-digit field is called the area number.
The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
United States Social Security numbers are nine-digit numbers in the format AAA-GG-SSSS : The first three digits were historically (prior to mid-2011) assigned by geographical region, and are thus called the area number. The area number cannot be 000, 666, or between 900 and 999.
The numbers beginning with 8 or 9 were issued as pseudo numbers by the Social Security Administration many years ago, by the Internal Revenue Service, and other organizations as a means to identify certain individuals.
As a result of the June 1936 decision, the current SSN is composed of three parts: The first three digits are the area number. The next two digits are the group number. The final four digits are the serial number.
Should Social Security be capitalized when referring a social security number or card in a sentence? Technically it should be capitalized as it is a proper noun. However, it is often not in everyday writing because its easier to write in lower case and anyone reading it would still understand .
