Each tag structure is 12 bytes in size and, in the sample code above, is represented by an array of structures of the data type de nition TIFTAG. (See the next section for more information on TIFF tags.) The number of tags per IFD is limited to 65,535.
The TIFF file formats use 32-bit offsets, which limits file size to around 4 GiB. Some implementations even use a signed 32-bit offset, running into issues around 2 GiB. BigTIFF is a TIFF variant file format which uses 64-bit offsets and supports much larger files (up to 18 exabytes in size).
The default is 2**32 - 1, which is effectively infinity. That is, the entire image is one strip. Use of a single strip is not recommended. Choose RowsPerStrip such that each strip is about 8K bytes, even if the data is not compressed, since it makes buffering simpler for readers.
TIFF is an image file format. In this document, a file is defined to be a sequence of 8-bit bytes, where the bytes are numbered from 0 to N. The largest possible TIFF file is 2**32 bytes in length. A TIFF file begins with an 8-byte image file header that points to an image file directory (IFD).
TIFF images with strip layout have data stored in strips; each strip spans the entire width of the image and is one or more rows in height.
TIFF FILE FORMAT Unlike JPEG, TIFF files can have a bit depth of either 16-bits per channel or 8-bits per channel, and multiple layered images can be stored in a single TIFF file. TIFF files are an excellent option for archiving intermediate files which you may edit later, since it introduces no compression artifacts.
