Biomedical Composites in Dentistry Dental restorative materials are used for filling tooth cavities or treating dental caries, and traditional materials are Amalgam, gold, alumina, zirconia, acrylic resins, silicate cements, etc.
Amalgam remains the gold standard for durable restorations, although resin composites have shown reasonably long survival rates. Many direct restorative materials are also used as cavity liners and bases, and as pit-and-fissure preventive sealants.
Amalgam fillings are held in place with mechanical locks and undercuts. This mechanical retention is not required with composite resin fillings as it actually bonds to tooth.
Amalgam does not chemically bond to tooth surface but requires tooth preparation to create a shape of cavity that contains both retention and resistance forms to prevent dislodging of the restoration. This is carried out by creating undercuts, dovetails, pits and grooves in the dentine of the tooth.
Amalgam. Amalgam may be used for Class V restoration, but its use is limited by the fact that it requires the provision of undercuts into the cavity, if these are not present as a result of caries removal, ie it is unlikely to fulfil the ideals of minimally invasive dentistry.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
Traditionally resin-based composites set by a chemical setting reaction through polymerization between two pastes. One paste containing an activator (not a tertiary amine, as these cause discolouration) and the other containing an initiator (benzoyl peroxide).
