At their most basic definitions, an inlay fills in cavities and hollows in a tooth in the areas between the cusps. An onlay will not just fill in cavities in those spaces, but they can work for a larger area, including the cusps. They work similarly to crowns, but they do not cover the entire surface of the tooth.
Types of Dental Inlays and Onlays Porcelain. Zirconia. Gold. Composite.
The Onlay covers the cusp of the tooth while inlay only fills the area between the cusps. On the other hand, crown will cover the entire biting surface of tooth and the tooth structure above gum line. The cost of both is almost similar but Onlay can be a little cheaper in price.
Inlay is used when the cavity is too large for simple filling. Inlay is created as a single solid piece to fill the cavity. It is cemented on tooth.
How long do Inlays/Onlays last? Inlays and onlays are regarded as a long-term solution for restoring your teeth. In general, they would be expected to last a similar number of years to crowns (around 10-15 years) and considerably longer than conventional fillings – provided you have good oral hygiene.
Compared to a crown, an onlay is a less aggressive restoration when one can be performed, as less tooth structure needs to be removed in order to place the onlay. The costs are similar, but an onlay is a little cheaper than a crown. As such, an onlay is actually the preferred restoration when possible.
You should prefer an onlay because onlays allow the majority of your tooth to stay in place. Inlays come up against fillings but offer a better and more long-term approach because they cover a larger area more easily.
Cavity formed for the inlay should be located in the dentin of the tooth and have sufficient depth within the safety zones. A bevel (bevel of enamel prisms) is crated within the operational bed enamel. Cavity formed for the inlay should be asymmetric.
How Much Does Dental Inlays Cost? Most dental insurance plans will cover some costs related to the inlays procedure. It is because these treatments are usually considered restorative. However, on average, inlays can cost from $700 to $800.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. It's most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or "cusps." These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
