An RTF file comprises a series of control words, control symbols, and groups. A control word is a sequence of letters preceded by a backslash and terminated by a space, digit, or any non-alphabetic character. Control words support the representation of the structure, formatting, and layout of document text.
RTF stands for Rich Text Format and is a universal document file format and is easily read by many of the word-processing packages.
RTF files contain both configuration information and the actual text of the document. The formatting includes bold, italics, font size, and margin settings. This means that when you open an RTF file in a word processing program, the text will retain its original design.
RTF Syntax An RTF file consists of unformatted text, control words, control symbols, and groups. For ease of transport, a standard RTF file can consist of only 7-bit ASCII characters. (Converters that communicate with Microsoft Word for Windows or Microsoft Word for the Macintosh should expect 8-bit characters.)
Code syntax. It is programmed using groups, a backslash, a control word and a delimiter. Groups are contained within curly braces ({}) and indicate which attributes should be applied to certain text. The backslash (\) introduces a control word, which is a specifically programmed command for RTF.
The RTF file can also include groups for fonts, styles, screen color, pictures, footnotes, comments (annotations), headers and footers, summary information, fields, and bookmarks, as well as document-, section-, paragraph-, and character-formatting properties.
RTF files support various formatting options such as bold, italics, underlining, font styles, colors, and more, allowing for visually appealing and well-structured documents. Images and objects. RTF files can include images, tables, charts, and other objects, enabling better visual representation and data organization.
