Take a rag and wipe away the excess glue. Before the glue dries, take an RO sander and run it over the areas where the glue was applied. The sawdust, created by the sanding process, will mix with the glue blurring the lines between the different pieces of wood.
Marquetry is a decorative technique where wood veneers are sawn into a pattern and then assembled like a jigsaw. Inlay is similar but instead of assembling a large panel of veneer, the decoration is inset into a recess cut into a larger panel of wood.

Fill the hole with the granulated inlay material. Fill it loosely; dont pack it in too tightly. It is best to mound the granules up a little bit over the hole. A small spoon or even a toothbrush can help put the granules in the right place.
If there are any remaining gaps or holes in the veneer you can fill with a wax filler after you have stained and sealed or just sealed the wood. *You could try method 2 using a cold hide glue, (Titebond) but this would mean leaving a weight / pressure on the repair for 48 hrs or more.
Here is how I fix cracks: Mix up some paper clay from your clay body. Add a few drops of clear glaze and some finely grounded bisque from the same clay as the mug. Clean any dust away and add some clear glaze on the chip. As it dries, it may open up some cracks again, but keep filling it with more paper clay.
inlay, in the visual arts, any decorative technique used to create an ornamental design, pattern, or scene by inserting or setting into a shallow or depressed ground or surface a material of a different colour or type. Inlay techniques are used in enamelwork, furniture decoration, lacquerwork, and metalwork.
All types of inlay and stringing can be repaired including mother of pearl, shell, metals, ivory, tortoiseshell and bone. Marquetry is a specialism of the team, so if your item has missing parts they can match almost any wood and pattern either with new woods or period stock.
