While ADA codes for crowns include separate listings depending on what type of metal or material is used, no distinction is made for the type of metal used in the following inlay codes: 02510-Inlay, metallic, one surface; 02520-Inlay, metallic, two surfaces; 02530-Inlay, metallic, three or more surfaces; 02543-Onlay,
Your tooth is sensitive after the filling this is completely normal straight after the treatment has finished. Its important to avoid hot and cold foods for at least a few hours while your filling sets. Pain should subside within a week or so and sensitivity should stop after two to four weeks.
It is normal for the tooth to be sensitive for a few days, or even a few weeks, after the inlay/onlay has been placed. In general, however, this sensitivity should be relatively mild and trending towards improvement within a couple of days.
After the procedure there may be a little discomfort with the inlay or onlay, but many people adapt immediately to the new chewing surfaces. Sometimes the tissue around the work is sore or the tooth is temporarily sensitive to cold or hot foods. These minor problems should resolve themselves in one or two days.
Fallen inlay / onlay over time, particularly with patients with poor oral hygiene habits, leakage can occur along the margin of the prepared natural tooth and the inlay / onlay. This leakage allows bacteria to seep in, causing decay. When this decay becomes extensive enough, the inlay / onlay is prone to falling out.
Preparing for and placing an inlay/onlay can irritate the tooth and cause post-operative sensitivity which may last for up to 3 months. The tooth underneath the inlay/onlay may need root canal treatment about 5% of the time during the lifetime of the tooth.
It is also normal to experience some temperature and pressure sensitivity after each appointment. The sensitivity should subside a few weeks after the placement of the final restoration. A mild pain medication (Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Motrin) every 4 hours) should ease any residual discomfort.
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling fitted into the grooves of your tooth. Its most often used as restoration for cavities (also known as dental caries) that are centered in your tooth instead of along the outer edges or cusps. These cavities have usually not progressed into more extensive tooth decay.
