The redline refers to the maximum engine speed that an internal combustion engine is designed to operate without causing damage to any internal components. The redline of an engine depends on various factors such as the mass of the engine parts, composition of the parts and their interrelated balance.
Engines are designed in such a way that they can perform at redline without breaking down or taking damage at those RPMs. This doesnt mean that you should redline your engine often. Working at peak performance be it an engine or anything else will take its toll and cause wear and tear.
The redline is generally understood to mean the maximum revs the engine is built to withstand for fairly short periods of time only without failure. So if a car with a computerized engine has an automatic transmission, you can very likely run it to redline hundreds of times without doing it any serious harm.
Engines are designed to rev to the red-line with a little safety margin. Most times, pointless as max power is normally about 5001000 RPM before the red line. If you rev to the red-line before changing gears, youve already past the optimum RPM by a long shot and youre driving on the downward slope of the power band.
Unless you have an engine whose power falls off dramatically between peak power and redline rpms, or one where the redline is way above the peak power rpm, that means shifting at the redline.
Accidentally redlining your engine for a few seconds shouldnt be a problem, but excessively hitting the redline can cause premature engine wear and valve float.
Yes. It is good to redline the engine every once in a while provided the car is in sound working condition. Also more importantly you should look for an empty patch of road to redline it and this should be done only once the engine is warm, never in a cold engine.
You probably know that Redlining an engine is a bad thing. It means you have punched the throttle enough that the engine is spinning at a dangerously high speed. Everyone knows that redlining is to be avoided at all costs.
