For the rest of your collection, here are 10 pointers to keep in mind when identifying good custom vinyl records from bad ones. Assess How it Looks Overall. Check Whether the Record has Warps. Closely Examine the Record. Check for Heat-related Damage. Scan for Scratches. Play the Record.
Good (G): This record grading system describes docHub wear and noise, including potential skips. Its in a condition that affects the listening experience but is still playable. Fair (F): Heavy wear, with skips or other playback issues, is often considered for its collectible value rather than listening quality.
Inlay. The printed literature that appears in the back of CD cases. Inner Sleeve. Protective sleeve held inside the main cover that houses and protects the record. Insert.
The inlay card creates the cover for the back and both spines, while the CD Cover inserts into the lid of the CD case.
Scratches running parallel or diagonal to the grooves. These may cause the needle to skip or get stuck in a loop. Cracks, severe warping, deep cuts. Albums in this condition are usually unplayable (or close to it), and youre better off steering clear.
Look for scratches. Orient your record so the bright light source above you is blocked out by the label, and all scratches will become blindingly apparent. In ambient lighting conditions (most common), just keep shifting the records orientation until you see some scratches.
Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that dont affect ones listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. Spindle marks may be present.
A Very Good Plus or Excellent record is a high-grade record with great playback, that may have minor signs of wear. Oftentimes, the only thing separating a VG+ record from an NM rating are small signs of handling, perhaps light discoloration on the cover, gentle ring wear, or light scuffs.
