Different methods for creating a block quote in Word In a Word document, select the quoted text, then click Layout on the ribbon. Set the left indent to 0.5cm, and click the Enter key. Use the arrows in the indent size box to increase or decrease the indentation. Once in place, the block quote can be formatted.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
Introduce your quote, then on a new line, indent the entire quotation inch from the left margin. The in-text citation follows the ending punctuation of the quotation. Remember to maintain double spacing in the essay.
Block quotations start on their own line. The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new paragraph, and is double spaced. Block quotations are not surrounded by any quotation marks. The punctuation at the end of the block quotation goes before the citation.
Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box. (Only in Word) Select the AutoFormat tab, and under Replace, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box.
How to paraphrase Read the original source carefully. Identify the main point(s) and key words. Cover the original text and rewrite it in your own words. Write the paraphrase in your own style. Review your paraphrase to check it accurately reflects the original text but is in your words and style.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
MLA and APA Directions In MLA format, a quotation of more than four full lines of prose or three lines of verse should be indented inch from the left margin and double-spaced like the rest of the paper. In APA format, a quotation of more than forty words should also be indented half an inch from the left margin.
