hello everyone this video is about formatting block quotations as a reminder a block quote is any quote that is four lines long or longer in the case of my example here I have a pretty sizable quote instead of being formatted like a 1 to 3 line quotation we want to actually offset from the rest of the paragraph so the first thing I want to do is omit I come to the very beginning Iamp;#39;m going to hit enter and then when I come to the very edge of the quote and Iamp;#39;m going to hit enter again now itamp;#39;s still not quite right because now itamp;#39;s three paragraphs instead of one paragraph with a block quotation so the first thing Iamp;#39;m going to do is Iamp;#39;m going to take this quote and Iamp;#39;m going to make sure itamp;#39;s flush against the margin and Iamp;#39;m going to highlight the whole quote so that I can hit tab so that the whole thing is flush against the 1/2 inch margin now because this signals to the reader that this is a block quote when itam

Narrative In-text Citation: List the authors last name only (no initials) and the year the information was published, like this: (Dodge, 2008). (Author, Date). IF you use a direct quote, add the page number to your citation, like this: (Dodge, 2008, p. 125). (Author, Date, page number)
Quotation marks, double () or single (), are generally used for direct quotes, certain titles, and words used in a special manner.
Your in-text citation should include both authors: the author(s) of the original source and the author(s) of the secondary source. For example: (Habermehl, 1985, as cited in Kersten, 1987).
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). Heres a direct quote (Trouble 22).
When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the authors last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, like, for example, (Jones, 1998). One complete reference for each source should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
Then, for the in-text or parenthetical citation, use this format: (qtd. in [last name of author of your indirect source] [page number of quotation]). This answer was adapted from p. 226 of the MLA Handbook, 7th ed.
Introduce your quote, then on a new line, indent the entire quotation inch from the left margin. The in-text citation follows the ending punctuation of the quotation. Remember to maintain double spacing in the essay.
